It’s a date!

If your idea of ultimate ‘love is in the air’ is a nice movie evening, we’ve got you covered. Something old, something new, here sharing 7 of the best romantic films to watch (or rewatch) on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, which means many of you are frantically trying to secure a reservation at that candlelit place you and your bae love so much. Should you not prevail, worry not: There are a few other Valentine’s Day dates you still have time to plan. But if your idea of ultimate ‘love is in the air’ is a nice movie evening, we’ve got you covered. Something old, something new, here sharing 7 of the best romantic films to watch (or rewatch) on Valentine’s Day.

My Best Friend’s Wedding

An old school romance is nothing without rivalry. It wouldn’t be a Valentine’s Day list without romance royalty Julia Roberts. While Pretty Woman (1990) and Notting Hill (1999) are crowd-pleasing favourites, this classic sees an equally charming young Roberts grapple with feelings stirred up by her best friend’s marriage to his preppy fiancée (Cameron Diaz) as she attempts to sabotage the union. She’s a perfectly imperfect lead for any cynical viewers in this chaotically heartfelt dramedy.

Falling Inn Love

Set in the New Zealand outback, Falling Inn Love strikes the perfect balance between saccharine and self-aware as an uptight city girl meets a laid-back country boy and tests the theory of whether opposites do, in fact, attract. With a comforting cookie-cutter format, a charming Christina Milian and an endearing supporting cast, it’s a not-so-guilty modern staple for all romcom fans.

To All The Boys: Always and Forever

Based on Jenny Han’s The New York Times-bestselling novel, the third and final instalment of the boy-crazed trilogy is perfect for a cosy evening. This time around, teen lovebirds Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky deal with the challenges of growing up: distance, college, peer pressure. It promises its signature blend of romance, plot twists, tender sisterly antics and classic teenage melodrama.

A Star is Born

We were rooting for Ally (Lady Gaga) and Jackson (Bradley Cooper) from the second their paths cross in a bar where she’s belting out Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose.” With Jackson’s help, a star is born—but so is an epic romance. It starts with so much promise, and even when things start to take a turn, we’re left hoping (against all hope) that things will somehow turn out all right.

Romeo + Juliet

The Shakespeare play is one of the saddest love stories of all time, so this is kind of a no-brainer, but it’s Baz Luhrmann’s gorgeous treatment of the film that gets the vote in our book. Between the beach setting, the costume party, and — yes — ’90s-era Leonardo DiCaprio, you’ll recite every speech in iambic pentameter, just like you learned in English class.

The Notebook

Do you need an explanation why we included this tearjerker? Not only do you get Ryan Gosling, you also get that classic scene where Noah proclaims “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird”. Sigh. And if you’ve read the novel from Nicholas Sparks, it makes the movie even more special. The iconic story between Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) really hits the spot. A summer love will always have a special place in your heart and you never know when that person can pop back in your life again.

Dear John

Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) and John Tyree (Channing Tatum) prove that there’s no fighting true love. It only took two weeks for the two to fall for one another, but life always gets in the way. Even with John’s deployment and the endless miles that separate them, you’ll see that people who are meant to be together always find a way back to one another.
