GREEN IS GOOD

The National Museum of Qatar has been awarded the Green Organisation accolade for sustainability best practices.

Ongoing efforts toward sustainability have won the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) recognition in the International Beautiful Buildings Green Apple Awards 2022, organised by the Green Organisation, an international non-profit environmental group.

NMoQ received the award under the Public Building category for its sustainability best practices including the museum’s extensive green features, from planning and design through to construction management and building operations.

The Beautiful Buildings Green Apple Awards is a worldwide campaign to show appreciation for sustainable buildings and to promote positive contributions made to the built environment. Since its unveiling in 2019, NMoQ has received several sustainability accolades, becoming the first national museum in the world to receive both a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold and a four-star GSAS (Global Sustainability Assessment System) sustainability rating. LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and certifications from LEED are globally recognised symbols of sustainability achievements, while GSAS is the first performance-based system in the MENA region developed for rating green buildings and infrastructure.

The National Museum of Qatar preserves and celebrates the history of Qatar. It engages with its present and inspires the country’s ambitions for the future. The museum, which opened in March 2019, gives voice to the country’s culture and heritage through artefacts, oral histories, music, films and artworks.

The NMoQ takes the visitor on an immersive and multisensory journey of its 1.5km thematic and chronological galleries. The iconic building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, is inspired by the desert rose and comprises of large interlocking disks of different diameters and curvatures that surround the restored historic palace of the late Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, ruler of Qatar (1913 – 1949). Sheikha Amna bint Abdulaziz bin Jassim Al-Thani has served as a director since 2013. ✤
