Art for all

Qatar Museums Invites Culture Pass Plus and Culture Pass Family Members to Explore Qatar’s Public Art through Fannek Initiative

As part of its continued mission to take art beyond four walls, Qatar Museums is currently hosting Fannek, a month-long public art initiative that provides a gateway for the museum’s Culture Pass Plus and Culture Pass Family members to explore Qatar’s public art scene through walking tours and talks.

Throughout the month of November, Culture Pass Plus and Culture Pass Family members can look forward to a host of informative and culturally stimulating events introducing them to the many public artworks and artists who have contributed to Qatar’s vibrant public art scene. These include a Public Art Tour of the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) on November 13 from 9am to 10am. The tour spans both NMoQ’s indoor and outdoor spaces with focus on artworks such Jean-Michel Othoniel’s fountain sculptures ‘Alfa’ and Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani’s ‘Motherland’ representing the region’s last generation of women who wore the battoula.

On November 20 from 9am to 10am, Culture Pass Plus and Culture Pass Family members are invited to take part in a guided walking tour of the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park, which is home to some of Doha’s first public artworks commissioned by Qatar Museums. The tour will give guests the chance to experience Richard Serra’s infamous ‘7’ overlooking Doha’s skyline as well as an interactive artwork entitled ‘Folded Extracted Personified’ inspired by MIA’s collection by British artist, Liam Gillick.

Eng. Abdulrahman Ahmad al-Ishaq, Director of Public Art Department at Qatar Museums, said: “Qatar has a thriving public art scene that continues to expand through Qatar Museums’ ongoing initiatives that aim to breathe life into urban spaces with striking murals and installations. Members of the community are invited to sign up to become Culture Pass Plus and Culture Pass Family members to enjoy complimentary access to Fannek’s informative and inspiring public art events.”

As part of the Fannek programming, Qatar Museums recently hosted talks exploring the concept of vandalism and the role of communities in preserving and protecting public art.
