The General Manager of Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay talks cosmopolitan ethos, future plans and Qatar ‘must-sees’

You are back in Doha after a break of more than 10 years. What are the biggest changes you are noticing?
Returning to Doha after over a decade, one of the most striking changes is the rapid development and modernisation of the city. The skyline has transformed with iconic skyscrapers and architectural marvels, reflecting Qatar’s ambition and vision for the future, especially Qatar National Vision 2030. Additionally, there’s a tangible energy and vibrancy in the city, evident in its burgeoning cultural scene, world-class infrastructure and diverse tourism offerings.

Your experience is truly global in nature, having worked in places as diverse as London, Tokyo, Istanbul, Dubai and Kyiv. How will you bring this to bear at Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay?
My global experience has endowed me with a deep appreciation for cultural nuances, diverse perspectives and the importance of personalised service in the hospitality industry. At Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, I aim to leverage this experience to create a truly international and inclusive guest experience. Drawing inspiration from my tenure in various cosmopolitan cities, I will strive to infuse the hotel with a blend of global sophistication with a sense of place, authentic hospitality and innovative offerings that cater to the discerning tastes of our diverse clientele.

How does Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay pay homage to its iconic New York sister?
Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay pays homage to its iconic New York sister by seamlessly integrating elements of New York’s rich Art Deco style, iconic design motifs and culinary excellence, to create a truly immersive and unforgettable guest experience. Embodying the timeless elegance, impeccable service and unparalleled luxury synonymous with the Waldorf Astoria brand worldwide, while celebrating its Qatari heritage and unique identity.

What can guests expect at the hotel over the coming months?
We just had the recent successful opening of MURU, a truly culinary journey by acclaimed Chef Mauro Colagreco, who celebrates nature’s alchemic potency through the four elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire. We are also looking forward to the upcoming months, where guests can expect an array of exciting new openings and offerings at Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, from Ramadan’s Iftar and Suhour at Tribeca Souq and an under the stars experience, to a Ramadan exclusive rooms package. We will celebrate the opening of upcoming new culinary destinations, like Yun, a prosperous dining destination that offers a forward-thinking approach to Cantonese and Taishanese cuisine, as well as the opening of Volante, a coffee parlour and micro-roastery that offers bespoke blends for passionate coffee connoisseurs in a lush garden setting. There will be something to delight every Qatar resident and discerning traveller.

On a more personal note, what are the three ‘must-try’ or ‘must-see’ experiences you would recommend to visitors to Qatar?
Firstly, I highly recommend exploring the timeless beauty and cultural heritage of Souq Waqif, where visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant sights, sounds and flavours of Qatari tradition.
Secondly, a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art is a must, offering a captivating journey through centuries of Islamic art, architecture and civilisation against the backdrop of Doha’s stunning waterfront skyline.
Lastly, experiencing the awe-inspiring beauty of the desert with a thrilling desert safari or a tranquil sunset camel ride is an unforgettable way to connect with Qatar’s natural landscape and Bedouin heritage. ✤
