No flights needed. At Sabai Thai in Doha, AMS finds a slice of Thailand, from the warm welcome to the flavours that transport you far beyond the city.

We pulled up to the valet at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa and stepped into the calm of the lobby, before making our way out towards the gardens. It was quieter there, the noise of the city softened by water and greenery. Tucked away at the back sat Sabai Thai – the restaurant was almost hidden from view.

The location deserves a mention too. So many of Doha’s well-known dining spots are centred around West Bay or The Pearl, so for those of us living on the other side of the city, this felt like a real treat to have so close by. Especially on a Tuesday evening after a working day, the convenience of being able to stop by Sabai Thai and indulge in its crowd-pleasing green curry with grilled Black Onyx Angus beef, without a long drive, made it even more appealing..

A gong marked our arrival, followed by a large carved wooden door that felt like it belonged in Chiang Mai rather than Doha. On the other side was Bann, greeting us with a traditional Thai Sawadee kha and the kind of warmth that made us feel instantly welcome. And that was the thing. From the moment we stepped inside, it reminded us of evenings in Thailand when you wander into somewhere softly lit, a little tucked away, where time slows and everything feels that bit more relaxed.

The Ambience

Sabai Thai was filled with dark woods, carved details and warm low lighting, which made it feel cosy and inviting. There were different pockets to the room too. It had tables near the open kitchen if you liked the buzz, softer corners for longer dinners, and window-side seating looking out over the water if you wanted something calmer. Along one side, a separate smoking area kept things practical without intruding.

We were seated beside the kitchen, which we didn’t mind at all. There’s something reassuring about watching chefs at work, the rhythm of it. Woks flaring, quick movements, the low hum of a kitchen that knows exactly what it’s doing. Our waitress, Phit, looked after us throughout the evening with a calm grace and warmth that felt wonderfully Thai.

A Menu That Delivers On Every Level

In Doha we’re spoiled for food choices, but it had been a good few weeks since we’d had Thai food and we were hungry too, so we were really looking forward to this. Before we knew it, prawn crackers had arrived with sweet chilli sauce. Light, airy and faintly salty, they had just enough sweetness and heat to keep us reaching back in without thinking. What is it about prawn crackers that always makes you want one more?

To start, the vegetable dumplings set a gentle tone. Delicate, almost translucent, they opened up to a fresh, healthy filling. The green sauce added a lively edge that brought the dish to life. Shortly after came the prawn tempura, hot and crisp, the batter thin enough to give way instantly to soft, sweet prawns. A proper crunch, then that tender, almost buttery middle.

Thai Mains That Impressed

Moving on to the mains, the green curry with grilled Black Onyx Angus beef was where the meal really stepped up. You could smell it before it arrived, with coconut, spice and something slightly sweet. The sauce coated rather than drowned, clinging to the slices of beef. The meat itself had that deep grilled edge, slightly charred, giving contrast to the creamy curry. Heat built slowly, never overwhelming, balanced by basil and coriander root that kept it bright. With jasmine rice, it became one of those dishes you don’t rush.

We both remarked how some restaurants have either the atmosphere or the food, and people often forgive one for the other, but this genuinely had both. Soft Thai music drifted through the room, while the water shimmered outside the window. The whole place felt deeply relaxing.

After that, the whole fried sea bass arrived. Breaking into it revealed soft, flaky flesh that almost fell away under the fork. The black pepper sauce added gentle warmth, while the tamarind cut through with a tangy sweetness that lifted everything. It was messy in the best way, the kind of plate you get stuck into rather than pick at.

Delectable Desserts

For dessert, things ended on a comforting note. Banana fritters were warm and soft, the outside just crisp enough, giving way to something almost creamy inside, offset by the cold vanilla ice cream. Then came the mango sticky rice, a dish that can so easily go wrong if the ingredients aren’t right. Simple on paper, but done properly here. The mango was ripe and fragrant, the rice soft and slightly chewy, soaked in coconut cream that tied everything together without becoming heavy.

Before we left, we chatted with Bann about the restaurant, its loyal following and favourite dishes. She spoke highly of the business lunch, which has clearly become a staple for those nearby looking for something polished and reliable during the working week. It made perfect sense. The setting, the warmth of service and the quality of the food all lend themselves just as easily to a smart lunch as they do to a relaxed evening meal.

If you’re looking for your Thailand fix in Doha, with amazing food to match, this is the place to come. You get the whole experience without having to get on a plane.
