Redefining A Destination

Ahmet Antepli, General Manager of Hilton Doha The Pearl, reflects on Doha’s development, management style and ‘must see’ spots.
What first inspired you to seek a career in the hospitality industry?
I’ve always considered myself a people person with an outgoing personality who genuinely enjoys connecting with others. I’m very hands-on, and I thrive in environments where I can actively engage with people and make a positive impact on their day. What truly inspired me to pursue a career in hospitality was the joy I felt in helping others – making them feel welcome, cared for and happy. I also love the sense of adventure this industry offers; no two days are ever the same and I find energy in the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of the work. My personality naturally aligned with the values of hospitality and that passion drove me to start from the bottom and grow through every opportunity, learning and evolving along the way.
Being a Doha native, you must have seen significant changes in the industry over your career. What stands out most to you?
As someone born and raised in Doha, it’s been really special to witness how much the city has grown and evolved over the years. I first left in 1988, then returned for a short time during the 2006 Asian Games. I came back again in 2016 and most recently re-joined the hospitality scene in 2024 with The Plaza Doha, LXR Hotels & Resorts. Each time I returned, I noticed more positive changes – not just in the skyline, but in the energy of the city and the direction it’s heading.
What stands out to me the most is the steady, healthy growth of the hospitality and entertainment sectors. There’s been a clear effort to develop these industries in a thoughtful way, blending tradition with innovation. It’s exciting to see Doha becoming more of a global destination, while still holding onto its roots. I feel proud to be part of this journey and genuinely look forward to what the future holds for the city and the industry.

You’ve said you want to redefine Hilton Doha the Pearl as a leisure-driven destination. Please tell us about the resort and the features you are particularly keen to promote in this regard.
We are placing strong emphasis on our leisure offerings, particularly the private beach, outdoor pool and eforea Spa – all key to creating a relaxed, resort-style atmosphere for our guests. These spaces are thoughtfully designed to offer a tranquil escape, whether for sunseekers, spa-goers or those simply looking to unwind.
Our diverse dining scene continues to be a highlight. Mulberry Tavern, our modern gastropub, offers hearty comfort food with a contemporary twist. For casual dining, The Terrace by Lobby Café serves all-day alfresco meals in a breezy, welcoming setting, while La Pergola Lounge brings a touch of sophistication with weekend brunches and live entertainment.
We’re also proud to be a family-friendly destination. Our Kids’ Club offers a safe and engaging space with supervised activities designed to keep our youngest guests entertained. In addition, our hotel regularly hosts family-focussed brunches and recreational activities, ensuring memorable moments for guests of all ages.
Are there any upcoming developments that you can share with our readers?
Soon we will be announcing the launch of SOL Beach Lounge, an exciting new beachside destination designed for relaxation and vibrant social experiences. Our guests can look forward to laid-back Latin American cuisine, crafted beverages and leisure activities by the shore such as beach volleyball and paddle boarding. Whether dining by the sea or simply unwinding with friends, our beach lounge promises to be the go-to spot for our guests.
Alongside that, we are delighted to soon introduce Karma Lounge, a brand-new venue at our hotel serving a fusion of Asian and international flavours, complemented by DJ performances to elevate the experience. Coming soon!

How would you describe your management style and what do you believe is the most important trait to get the best from your team?
I would describe my management style as hands-on and collaborative. I like to work alongside my team – not just to support them but also to keep learning myself. While I may not be an expert like an executive chef, I’m always eager to understand how things work and how different roles contribute to our success. Communication is key for me and I believe in two-way dialogue. I listen to my team, and I value their input. Often, their perspectives – especially from younger team members or those more in tune with new technologies – bring fresh and practical ideas that improve how we work together.
I also see myself as a coach and mentor. I want my team to grow, feel empowered and be productive in ways that feel meaningful to them. One thing I always avoid is giving promises I can’t keep. I’ve seen the damage that can do and I know how it feels when trust is broken. For me, being honest, respectful and consistent builds stronger, long-term relationships.
At the end of the day, when you truly listen to your team and treat them with fairness and respect, you become part of their journey – and that’s something they’ll carry with them.
On a more personal note, how do you spend your time in Qatar when you’re not working and what three things you would say are ‘must sees’ for visitors to Doha?
When I’m not working, I really enjoy staying active. I like jogging, rope jumping and kayaking – these are my go-to activities that help me unwind and stay energised. I’m also a diecast car collector and a big car enthusiast. I love working with my hands, whether it’s fixing things or simply enjoying the details of model cars.
As for things to see and do in Doha, the first must is definitely a trip to the inland sea and the desert. The dunes, the calm of the desert and even overnight stays out there offer a unique experience that’s hard to find anywhere else. I also recommend going fishing and spending time by the sea – Qatar’s waters are truly beautiful and peaceful.
Second, without a doubt, Souq Waqif. It holds a special place in my heart from my childhood. It’s full of life, culture, tradition and some of the best local food. It’s a true reflection of Doha’s heritage and a place I always enjoy visiting.
Third, the museums, especially the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum, with their unique structures and designs that are deeply rooted in the country’s heritage. ✤
