New Board Chair Takes Up Post

We quizzed Ilkin Imanov, General Manager of The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, to learn about his recent appointment to an important position within Marriott International’s internal structure.

Congratulations on your appointment as Chair of the Marriott Business Council Qatar. Please explain to our readers what the council does and what your role will be.
The Marriott Business Council addresses common challenges collectively for a stronger impact. This includes supporting the community throughout the year or after a disaster, hosting events, lobbying on issues affecting the hotel business, saving costs, generating revenue and engaging associates in important causes. Business Councils perpetuate Marriott’s culture, strengthen communities, advocate for Marriott’s business interests and lead cross-brand, market-driven initiatives. The Marriott Business Council holds meetings with General Managers of all Marriott Hotels in Qatar and engages in various events and activities throughout the year.

What challenges does the council currently have in its sights and how do you hope to address these?
The Marriott Business Council is focused on addressing several key challenges, including navigating the post-pandemic recovery, enhancing sustainability practices and supporting community resilience. We aim to address these challenges by leveraging our collective expertise and resources, fostering collaboration among different brands and regions and implementing innovative solutions that align with Marriott’s core values and business objectives.

How has your previous experience prepared you for this role?
My previous experience has equipped me with a deep understanding of the hospitality industry, strong leadership skills and a strategic mindset. I have had the privilege of working in various capacities that have honed my ability to manage diverse teams, drive business growth and navigate complex challenges. This background will enable me to effectively lead the council and make impactful contributions.

How long is your tenure as chair and what do you hope to achieve during this period?
The tenure as chair is typically for a term five years. During this period, I aim to strengthen our community engagement, enhance operational efficiencies and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation across all brands. I also hope to address key industry issues and contribute to the overall success and sustainability of Marriott’s business in Qatar.
