Mediterranean Mastery

Exceptional food and outstanding service combined when AMS visited Akte Pier 51 at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha.

Walking into Akte Pier 51, we were struck by its unassuming charm, a space that welcomed us with understated elegance. We could already sense the gentle rhythm of the evening setting in as the soft glow of lights led us into the heart of the space.

A Terrace With A View

Yet, it was the outdoor terrace that first captured our attention. Beyond the glass doors, the setting sun bathed the marina in hues of orange and pink, while the lights of the city began to twinkle in the distance. A large wooden table sat in pride of place, surrounded by soft, multi-coloured cushions. The seating was thoughtfully arranged to offer both privacy and an unimpeded view of the water. There was a certain magic in the air, the kind that only an open sky and a waterfront view can provide.

The décor outdoors complemented the scenery. The natural wood of the furniture was paired with vibrant foliage, creating a lush yet refined setting. Lanterns and small candles dotted the tables, their flickering flames dancing to the rhythm of the evening breeze. The sounds of the marina – a soft lapping of water, the occasional distant laughter – blended seamlessly with the restaurant’s playlist.

Artistry and Comfort

Inside, the restaurant’s design spoke of intentional artistry. The indoor seating area was framed by striking wooden beams that arched overhead like the branches of a tree, creating a canopy of intricate geometry. The walls carried a mural-like depiction of ocean waves, their movement almost tangible, capturing the spirit of coastal tranquillity. The rattan-backed chairs and caramel-toned leather banquettes provided both comfort and style. Punctuated by delicate greenery and tasteful décor, the interior exuded a balance of sophistication and ease.

Our culinary journey began with the fresh pita and lavash bread, a simple yet satisfying opener served with a trio of spreads: spicy feta, yogurt and tarama, as well as oil infused with thyme. The breads were warm and soft, the perfect canvas for the spreads. The spicy feta was a standout, offering a gentle heat balanced by creaminess. Each bite hinted at the attention to detail in the kitchen, a theme that would carry through the rest of the meal.

The Sea on a Plate

Next, the cold seafood on ice arrived as a showstopper, featuring a selection of prawns, mussels, oysters, lobster and calamari. Every piece was fresh, the natural flavours elevated by the accompanying sauces – a tangy tartare and a classic cocktail option. The lobster in particular had a delicate sweetness that paired beautifully with the tartare. It felt indulgent yet refreshingly light, a perfect prelude to the mains.

The octopus dish was another highlight. Grilled to tender perfection, it boasted a subtle smokiness complemented by a creamy roasted eggplant purée and capers that added bursts of saltiness. A touch of spicy feta tied the dish together, creating a harmonious balance of flavours. It was clear that this dish was crafted with both skill and an understanding of Mediterranean traditions.

Expert Care

As we paused to savour these flavours, we couldn’t help but take in the surroundings once more. The views, whether from the terrace or peeking through the expansive glass panels, remained breathtaking as the evening light softened. What stood out even more was the attentiveness of the staff. Boris, our waiter, was exceptional: both personable and professional, guiding us with thoughtful recommendations and making us feel like we were truly his guests of honour. The management team’s visible presence added an extra layer of care, ensuring every table was attended to with precision. It created an atmosphere that was as warm and welcoming as it was refined, making us feel truly valued as guests.

Surf and Turf

For the main course, we chose the lamb chops and the seabass. The chops were cooked to a succulent medium-rare, their richness enhanced by a bold sauce épicée and paired with crushed olive oil potatoes that were smooth and earthy. In contrast, the seabass offered a lighter profile, its flaky texture matched with a zesty harra sauce and sumac polenta. Each element on the plates felt purposeful, contributing to a symphony of taste that made each dish memorable.

Sweet Indulgence

To finish, we indulged in the pineapple carpaccio with peach sorbet and saffron. The carpaccio’s tangy sweetness was beautifully offset by the smooth, fruity sorbet, while the saffron added a touch of sophistication. It was a dessert that left us feeling refreshed and satisfied, the perfect ending to a meal that celebrated the art of Mediterranean cooking.

Final Thoughts

As we reflected on the evening, it became clear that Akte Pier 51 delivered an experience that went above and beyond. The care and attention from the staff, from Boris’s friendly recommendations to the thoughtful oversight of the management team, elevated the meal to something truly special. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Erhan Afacan, Executive Sous Chef Ramesh Galgana and Chef de Cuisine Raed Makke, the dishes showcased a mastery of Mediterranean flavours. Paired with the stunning venue, we couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to enjoy a special meal. ✤
