In partnership with the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba), Qatar Museums is showcasing the first large-scale exhibition of Latin American art in the WANA (West Africa and North Asia) region at the National Museum of Qatar.

Featuring paintings, photographs, films, sculptures, installations, textiles and elements of popular culture, LATINOAMERICANO | Modern and Contemporary Art from the Malba and Eduardo F. Costantini Collections presents a compelling overview of Latin America’s artistic production from 1900 to the present.

Through more than 170 artworks drawn from the collections of the Museum of Latin American Art Buenos Aires (Malba) and its founder, Eduardo F. Costantini, the exhibition captures the continent’s creative evolution while re-examining its art within critical and regional art historical frameworks.

Rather than following a chronological or geographical order, the exhibition is organised into six thematic sections. These explore Latin America’s shared natural landscapes, plural identities, urban development, moments of societal change and the processes of artistic emancipation that have emerged over time. This structure invites visitors to reflect on the key ideas, debates and preoccupations that have shaped the region’s modern and contemporary art.

By synthesising the connections between regional movements while preserving their distinct characteristics, the showcase highlights diverse thematic, formal, material and conceptual approaches across the continent.

Highlights include a stunning self portrait by artist Alice Rahon from 1951, El circo más lindo del mundo (The Most Beautiful Circus in the World) by Rafael Barradas, a watercolour painted in 1918, and the atmospheric rendering of George Gershwin, An American in Paris painted by Miguel Covarrubias in 1929.

The exhibition is curated by María Amalia García and Issa Al Shirawi.

This exhibition is presented as part of the Qatar-Argentina-Chile 2025 Year of Culture, with special thanks to the Years of Culture National Committee and the many private and institutional lenders for their generous support.
