Kalvin Ng checks out the multiple luxurious offerings at the iconic Mondrian Doha.

In a city where a new five-star hotel seems to open every few weeks – each boasting unparalleled levels of indulgence – the Mondrian Doha continues to stand tall as one of the most unique and elegant addresses in the Qatari capital. Since opening in 2017, the Mondrian has balanced cutting-edge trends with the modern spirit of luxury.

The exterior was designed by SWA Doha, who created the acclaimed hotel’s steel lattice exterior which perfectly complements the main tower with its luxurious materials, from marble and porcelain to tile and ceramics, designed to look like a proud falcon facing Lusail, a futuristic city which only emerged from the desert a few years ago. A nod to Qatar’s traditions while looking towards the future.

The interiors are by renowned designer Marcel Wanders and each space possesses its own identity, allowing guests to form a collection of stories woven with a main theme that runs throughout. Bespoke designs and Marcel Wanders’ signature style combine to create a truly holistic, sensual and memorable experience.

After a seamless early check-in, I take the elevator to my Deluxe Loft Suite, where the interplay of new and old continues. Taking inspiration from the Arabian Nights tale, Dutch designer Wanders styled the luminous room with contemporary white furnishings and modern art set against beige rugs evoking the Qatari sand dunes. The welcome gift of white chocolate eggs and a feather on a dark chocolate nest is another nod to the falcon.

The room is spacious, with two grey sofas facing a huge television; a dining table; and a large writing desk. Perfect for work or entertaining. The view is spectacular: Lusail’s modern skyscrapers on one side, West Bay Lagoon’s traditional villas on the other. Did I mention the Swarovski crystal chandelier above the bathtub? It’s one of many Wanders’ touches of refined luxury without going over the top. I have just enough time to soak in the scenery before lunch at CUT, the award-winning restaurant by celeb chef Wolfgang Puck.

The business lunch is, simply put, a ‘cut’ above the rest. It’s an opportunity to taste some of the restaurant’s best dishes, including a creamy mushroom tagliatelle, a delicate yet comforting roasted parsnip soup, a beautifully seared sea bream, and a perfectly cooked New York striploin with fluffy mashed potatoes. With other acclaimed restaurants including Morimoto and Hudson Tavern under one roof, any guest at the Mondrian will be able to easily satisfy their tastes.

If all the good food leaves you hungry for a spot of exercise, the Mondrian’s spacious gym has state-of-the-art machines and unobstructed views across the water to West Bay, while the pool – heated and enclosed under a spectacular stained-glass roof (another Wanders one-off) – is perfect for a casual dip.

After some shopping at nearby Lagoona Mall, it’s time for a dinner of modern Middle Eastern cuisine at Walima. The attentive hostess takes us to a table on the large outdoor terrace, overlooking The Pearl-Qatar. It’s a great setting to enjoy fresh salads, delicious mezzes and succulent mixed grills under the moonlight, just before a relaxing night’s sleep in the suite’s king-sized bed. The in-room breakfast the next morning is fresh, delicious and delivered promptly after ordering.

No stay at the Mondrian would be complete without some pampering at the award-winning ESPA spa. While the entrance to the women’s spa hints at a haven of white and pink mosaics, the décor of the men’s spa couldn’t be more different. Black, white and dark blue walls, gold mosaic tiles and seductive lighting create the ideal retreat for urban gladiators. The reception tells me my therapist, Dizhar, is one of the best in the business and he doesn’t disappoint. A hot stone massage and facial are just what the doctor ordered to soothe and cleanse away the stresses of city life, leaving me feeling refreshed and recharged.

The Mondrian Doha offers discerning guests a unique blend of modern indulgence and traditional hospitality with a touch of theatre and fantasy. Everywhere you look there are unique Marcel Wanders design touches, from the intricately beautiful Staircase to Nowhere, which has become a bit of an icon, to the swirling black and white lobby floors or the dazzling hanging lights of Walima. Each visit brings something new to explore and experience.
