The Batman

Need to Know
The Batman is a 2022 action movie and the newest film about this iconic character based on the DC comics stories. From Batman’s first appearance in DC comics in 1939, this is a character that has been used many times, however, this latest motion picture feels very different from previous depictions. The casting is incredible, as well as the soundtrack and cinematography.

Directors: Matt Reeves
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright

Why Is It Worth Watching?
In this movie, we follow Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), as he attempts to rid Gotham City of crime and corruption. During his purge of criminals, he comes across a grizzly series of murders that seem to be connected to him and the corruption in the city. The storyline is well thought out and executed as it keeps a strong grip on the audience’s attention. The cinematography and visuals were also jaw-dropping, including the consistent use of dark colours and oranges and reds that connected all the scenes perfectly. The perspective of the movie and the dim lighting also effectively created tension – as the camera often puts the audience in the characters’ places, which only adds thrill to it. The casting was also spectacular as Robert Pattinson embodies the stoic and nihilistic Batman to perfection, and Paul Dano’s depiction of the Riddler was flawless and spine chilling. The soundtrack is the final performer in this incredible film, and you will never again be able to hear Nirvana’s Something in The Way without feeling chills. Everything about this movie was hauntingly beautiful; you’ll be in awe as you watch each perfectly crafted scene. This was such a wonderful movie to watch. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

Turning Red

Need to Know
Turning Red is a 2022 Disney – Pixar animation following a young girl turning 13 who finds herself drifting from her mother as her interests expand. It’s the typical coming-of-age story with a major twist. This movie follows the style of many previous Pixar offerings, with cute animation and a light-hearted, fun story.

Director: Domee Shi
Cast: Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ava Morse

Why Is It Worth Watching?
The movie follows the 13-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) as she discovers her ability to turn into a giant red panda when her emotions get out of control, something that has been passed down in her family for generations. During this tumultuous time, she drifts from her family as she wishes to be her own person and not the perfect daughter her mother expects her to be. This is an adorable story about growth, friendship and family. The animation is incredible, with each character being extremely expressive and the movements being fluid. The backgrounds and details are also well animated, with many references to Toronto, where the story is placed. And with the movie being set in 2002, there is a lot of 2000s nostalgia. From Mei Lee’s Tamagotchi to the girl’s boy band obsession. A perfect joyful film to watch with family or by yourself.
