Cast: Matthew Rhys, Katee Sackhoff, Titus Welliver, Troy Baker, Adrienne Barbeau Joshua Bitton, Jayme Lawson, Michael Kel
Why Is It Worth Watching?
Plainly put, the impact of Watchmen – the 12-issue comic book series from 1986, written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons – cannot be overstated. Highly respected by both fans and critics, its depth and maturity has been a major influence on so many other works in the decades since its release.
Watchmen Chapter I marks the third major adaptation following Zack Snyder’s polarising 2009 film and Damon Lindelof’s acclaimed HBO miniseries, which served as a sequel and won 11 Emmys.
This new project goes back to basics and aims for a more faithful rendition of the source material, but this time in animated form. It centres around the infamous vigilante, Rorschach, as he investigates the murder of Edward Blake, aka The Comedian. Rorschach suspects a conspiracy targeting former masked heroes but his ex-teammates initially dismiss his claims. As events further unfold, they must race against time to uncover the truth.
In a world of incessant prequels and sequels of various admired intellectual properties, which more often than not fall short in comparison to the original works, the creators here reverently do justice and excellently bring Alan and Dave’s comic book panels to life.
