A Journey Of Sophistication And Flavour

AMS experienced a day of culinary indulgence at the Atrium Lounge.

During a recent visit to the Atrium Lounge at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Conventional Hotel, I had the pleasure of experiencing their Moroccan Breakfast. On entering the property, I was greeted by the sight of the magnificent interior – a grand dome structure at the centre, intricately designed to reflect an aura of sophistication. The space was adorned with plush seating in a palette of soft creams and golds, complemented by rich red accents. The elegant table lamps created a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

After being shown to my seat by Fatma, the breakfast was served up on a beautifully ornate copper tray. The presentation was visually appealing, with vibrant colours from the fresh vegetables, olives and juices contrasting against the warm tones of the tray and tableware.

Baked Treats And Savoury Delights

The assortment of breads and pastries was impressive. It included croissants, sesame-seed rolls and traditional Moroccan pancakes (baghrir), all of which were fresh and delicious. The croissants were buttery and flaky, while the baghrir had a delightful spongy texture, perfect for soaking up honey or jam.

Accompanying the bread was a variety of savoury items, including spring rolls and samosas. These had crispy exteriors and flavourful fillings that added a nice contrast to the sweeter elements of the breakfast. A bowl of mixed olives provided a tangy and slightly salty counterpoint to the other dishes Fresh vegetables, including carrots and leafy greens, added a refreshing crunch and balanced the meal nicely.

Shakshuka

One of the highlights of the breakfast was the shakshuka, a traditional North African dish of poached eggs in a rich, spiced tomato sauce. It was served in a small, colourful tagine, keeping it warm and adding to the authenticity of the experience. The eggs were perfectly cooked, with runny yolks that mixed beautifully with the robust and flavourful sauce. The combination of spices, including cumin and paprika, gave the dish a delightful depth that paired wonderfully with the fresh bread.

Kaab al-Ghazal

Another delightful addition was the Kaab al-Ghazal, also known as ‘gazelle horns’. These crescent-shaped pastries were filled with a fragrant almond paste and delicately flavoured with orange blossom water. The Kaab al-Ghazal was a blend of sweetness and nuttiness, with a tender, flaky pastry that melted in the mouth. This traditional Moroccan treat added an exquisite touch to the breakfast, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Morocco.

Beverages

The breakfast was complemented by freshly squeezed orange juice, which was vibrant and refreshing. Additionally, traditional Moroccan tea was served in ornate glasses. Aromatic and perfectly sweetened, it was a delightful accompaniment to the meal.

Afternoon Tea

Later that day, I was also fortunate enough to also sample their exquisite afternoon tea. I was greeted with a refreshing welcome drink of sparkling apple juice as the food was presented on elegant platters. The savoury selection was a delightful array of flavours. The slow-cooked beef with asparagus, cucumber and saffron aioli on pumpernickel bread was a standout, with tender beef complemented by the fresh crunch of the asparagus and cucumber, and the saffron aioli adding a rich, aromatic touch. The Scottish salmon with honey-glazed brie cheese and raspberry crispy wrap was another highlight, the fish perfectly smoked and pairing wonderfully with the creamy brie and sweet-tart raspberry. The light turkey and cheddar cheese with pistachio, spinach and strawberry long sponge was a unique and flavourful offering, balancing the savoury turkey and cheddar with the sweetness of the strawberry and the nutty crunch of the pistachio, making for a well-rounded bite.

Sumptuous Sweets

The sweet treats were equally impressive. The Luscious Berry Indulge featured a rich berry filling encased in a delicate pastry, with perfectly balanced sweet and tart flavours. The Lamington, a classic Australian treat, was soft and moist, coated in chocolate and coconut, adding a nostalgic and comforting touch. The Berry Bliss Tart was a visual and culinary delight, filled with a luscious berry compote and topped with fresh berries, providing a burst of freshness and sweetness in every bite. The Eton Mess was a playful dessert with layers of meringue, cream and fresh berries – light, airy and perfectly sweetened. The Floral Elegance pastry was a beautiful creation, with floral notes that added a sophisticated touch to the dessert selection.

The Arabic sweets selection included a variety of traditional treats such as Flower Baklava, Luqaimat Tart, Pistachio Borma and Saffron Pistachio. Each sweet was rich in flavour and texture, showcasing the intricate and delightful world of Middle Eastern desserts.
