fact spent time with the newly revived Passat Highline 2.0L – discovering comfort, refinement and confidence in every detail.
Everyone loves a good comeback story – it’s hard not to smile when a familiar favourite returns, ready to reclaim its spotlight. That smile only widened when we walked up to the all-new Volkswagen Passat Highline 2.0L, the model that sets the benchmark for the range.
As a team accustomed to test-driving luxury and high-performance models, we were curious: could a trusted business saloon still feel fresh in 2025?
From our first moments with the Passat, it was clear this was a car that had far more to say than simply “I’m back”.

Quietly Commanding
Volkswagen didn’t reintroduce the Passat to blend in. The Highline’s redesigned front end features a floating section tied together by a seamless LED strip, centred by an illuminated VW badge that’s hard to miss. Paired with IQ.Light dual-lens matrix headlights, this saloon adapts its lighting on the move – ideal for evening highway drives, early commutes and the odd unlit backstreet that reminds you why good headlights matter.
We enjoyed the welcome-light animation and dynamic indicators on every arrival. With its 19-inch alloys and long, sculpted silhouette, this saloon looks equally at home gliding up to a fivestar hotel valet or pulling up outside a cosy street-side café.
At the rear, super-red LED tail lights stretch across the width of the car, emphasising its segment-leading length. It delivers elegance with quiet presence – a gentle nudge that says, “Yes, you may admire me”.

Built for Comfort
If the exterior hints at comfort, the cabin confirms it. The new Passat is the longest and most spacious version ever built, and you feel that immediately. Leather seating, a panoramic sunroof and 30-colour ambient lighting set the tone, letting you choose everything from calm neutrals to cool blue or warm amber.
But the seating is the real headline. Ventilated massage seats in the front and rear, with electric adjustment and soft headrest pillows, bring a level of comfort to daily driving that feels genuinely uplifting. A single recline in the rear massage seat was enough to spark a collective realisation: our living room sofas might be due for replacement.
Practicality is strong too, with 17 storage compartments and a 520-litre boot. Whether it’s family duties, airport runs or a ‘five-minute’ errand that somehow becomes a full shopping trip, the Passat handles it with ease.
Seamless & Smart
Technology is one of the Highline’s strengths. The 15-inch infotainment display paired perfectly with the 10.25-inch digital cockpit, delivering crisp graphics and menus that didn’t require guesswork. The head-up display added clarity without feeling intrusive.
Wireless charging, front and rear USB ports and a smooth sevenspeaker audio system kept us connected. And while some car systems seem determined to test patience, the Passat kept things simple – no confusing menus, no digital scavenger hunts, just tech that quietly did its job.

Smooth & Steady
On the road, this 2.0L packs the strongest engine in the range, delivering 217hp and 350Nm of torque. Coupled with Volkswagen’s familiar seven-speed DSG transmission, the power delivery stayed smooth and unbothered by traffic. Acceleration felt responsive without being abrupt, and the car maintained a reassuring sense of stability at higher speeds – the composure you expect from well-sorted German engineering.
Refinement was just as clear. Road noise stayed low, gear changes barely noticeable and the overall drive had an easygoing quality that made longer journeys feel shorter. Its charm lay in its steady confidence – more “I’ve got this” than “watch me”.
Assistance That Matters
The Passat Highline came equipped with driver assistance features that added confidence to the experience. Front Assist, Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control all worked quietly in the background, stepping in when needed and staying out of the way when they weren’t. The 360-degree camera and Park Assist made tight manoeuvres less stressful, while rear cross-traffic alert proved handy in car parks when everyone seemed to have the same idea at the same time.
Multiple airbags, ISOFIX anchors and a sturdy structure built around Volkswagen’s safety standards contributed to a sense of security throughout our time with the car.

The Bottom Line
By the end of our test drive, the Passat Highline 2.0L had made its case clearly. It delivered comfort, refinement and technology in a package that felt genuinely well thought out. From the spacious cabin to the calm, confident drive, it came across as a car designed for people who want ease without sacrificing quality.
This business saloon delivered the fullest expression of what the new Passat was meant to be. It carried itself with quiet assurance, offered features we actually used and delivered a driving experience that never felt strained or overcomplicated. In a segment full of options, the Passat stood out by simply doing everything well – by being the saloon that wins you over naturally, without ever resorting to jazz hands. ✤
