More than 12 emerging photographers from Qatar and the region are about to take over Al Hosh Gallery, bringing personal perspectives on identity, memory, heritage and belonging into focus.

Looking for some new names to add to your cultural radar? From September 5 to October 5, Frame and Focus brings together the work of more than 12 emerging photographers from Qatar and the wider region at Al Hosh Gallery, with documentary photography sitting alongside portraiture and more conceptual approaches. The subjects are equally varied. Drawing on their own cultural backgrounds and personal experiences, the photographers explore identity, memory, heritage, migration and belonging, using individual stories to look at wider ideas around place, community and contemporary life.

Every project on display has been developed during Tasweer Photography Festival’s 14-week Advanced Photography Course, which gives emerging photographers the opportunity to work directly with established figures from the international photography world. This year’s participants were mentored by 11 photographers, editors, curators and filmmakers. Among them are Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue; Marie Sumalla, international photo editor at Le Monde; VII Foundation CEO Gary Knight; and Ross Kauffman, the Academy Award-winning director of Born into Brothels. Photographers Anush Babajanyan, Rena Effendi and M’Hammed Kilito also took part. Now in its second edition, Frame and Focus offers the public a chance to see where those weeks of experimentation, feedback and project development have led and perhaps spot a photographer whose work you’ll be seeing much more of in the future. The exhibition will be open from Sunday to Wednesday (10am to 8pm), Thursday and Saturday (10am to 10pm) and Friday (3pm to 10pm). ✤
